The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced significant updates to the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) programs for 2024.
These changes aim to improve the application process, enhance benefits, and reduce barriers for beneficiaries.
Expanded Definition of Public Assistance
A critical update involves the expanded definition of a public assistance household. This change will help more individuals qualify for SSI by modifying eligibility criteria related to household income and resources. This move is designed to simplify the process and expand coverage to more people in need.
Removal of Certain Income Considerations
From September 30, 2024, food and basic living assistance from non-governmental sources will no longer be considered when calculating an individual’s income for SSI eligibility. This means that in-kind support for food, previously counted as part of an individual’s income, will not affect their SSI benefits.
This change is part of broader efforts to ensure that SSI recipients can receive the full amount of aid for which they are eligible without penalties for receiving community or familial support.

Increased Benefits Through COLA Adjustments
The SSA has also announced a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of 3.2% for 2024. This adjustment will increase the monthly benefits for SSDI and SSI recipients, reflecting changes in the consumer price index and rising living costs. For SSI, the maximum federal payment rates will be $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples.
Simplified Disability Evaluation
The disability evaluation process for SSDI claims is being streamlined to reduce the work history requirement from the current standards to five years.
This change is intended to make it easier for applicants to qualify for benefits, addressing long-standing complaints about the complexity and strictness of the disability evaluation process.
Increased Asset Limits
There is ongoing discussion about further reforms, including proposals to significantly raise the asset limits for SSI recipients. The proposed changes would increase the asset limits to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for couples, up from the current limits of $2,000 and $3,000, respectively.
These changes would enable recipients to save more without losing eligibility for benefits.
Future Outlook
The SSA continues to seek ways to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of the SSDI and SSI programs. These updates for 2024 represent significant steps toward reducing the bureaucratic challenges that have historically complicated the application and maintenance processes for these essential benefits.
These updates reflect the SSA’s commitment to adapting its policies in response to the evolving needs of the American public, particularly the disabled and elderly populations that rely heavily on these benefits for their livelihood.
